General Safety Training Questions
Who do I contact for general questions about safety training?
Contact Manjeet Randhawa, eLearning Coordinator, at mrandhaw@uci.edu or (949) 824-8805.
Required Safety Training
What safety training am I required to take?
There are two types of required safety training:
- EH&S safety training is identified by logging into the UC Learning Center at www.uclc.uci.edu and linking to “Safety Training Self-Assessment.” Training records are automatically maintained within the UC Learning Center. If you already completed the Self-Assessment and would like to access your results, link to “Required Activities.” If your job duties change or new hazards arise, please retake your Self-Assessment.
- Work unit specific training addresses unique hazards and processes encountered in each work unit and is identified through the Safety on Site (SOS) Hazard Identication Checklist . It is developed, provided or organized by the supervisor or SOS Representative. Refer to the Safety Training Resources webpage for work unit specific training resources. California Occupational Safety & Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) requires that training records be available for inspection. A sample roster is provided for your convenience.
Why do I have to take these trainings?
Training requirements and recommendations are based on California Occupational Safety & Health Administration (CAL/OSHA) standards. CAL/OSHA determines what types of training employees need, and EH&S offers those to you as a service.
I took a similar safety training at another institution . . . does the credit transfer?
For the majority of the safety training courses, credit does not transfer from other institutions. The one exception is Radiation Safety Part 2, but determination of this is considered on a case-by-case basis. To find out if you meet the requirements for Radiation Safety Part 2 credit, contact Rick Mannix (UCI's Radiation Safety Officer) at rcmannix@uci.edu or (949) 824-6098.
Why is it that some training courses, such as HIPAA, are not identified as required upon completing the Safety Training Self-Assessment in UC Learning Center?
The Safety Training Self-Assessment only identifies required and recommended training offered through EH&S. HIPAA, short for the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act, is not an EH&S training.
Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S): Directions & Parking
How do I get to Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S)?
EH&S is Building 41 on the campus map . From the main campus, take East or West Peltason to Bison Avenue and head toward the 73 freeway. Turn left at California Avenue (a signal). Turn left at Health Sciences Road (the 1st stop sign). EH&S, a barn-shaped building, is on the immediate right.
What type of parking is available at EH&S?
There are two types of parking available at EH&S: meters (15 minutes per quarter) and permit. The following campus permits are valid at EH&S Monday-Friday from 7:00 am – 12:00 am: C, CP/AR, S/Visitor, R, MX, MED. Temporary permits are available for $2 per hour (bill accepted, exact change required) at a yellow box in Parking Lot 83 , located off of Bison Avenue and Health Sciences Road. To investigate which UC Irvine Medical Center permits are valid at EH&S, link to the reciprocity chart on the Parking & Transportation Services website. EH&S also honors quarter and annual faculty/staff permits from other University of California campuses for the purpose of short-term visits.
Why do I have to pay to park at EH&S?
UCI's Parking & Transportation Department does not receive state funds for parking facilities, certain roadways, and maintenance. Therefore, they rely on permit revenue to fund these projects. Given that EH&S is on university grounds, it is included in lots charged for parking.
