The Radiation Safety Division (RSD) at UCI EH&S is the operational arm of the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) which is a regulatory required body consisting of researchers and subject matter experts in the field of radiation use. The RSC is authorized by the Chancellor to manage the radiation protection program and oversee the safe use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing machines in clinical, research, and academic settings on the UCI campus.
Any person on campus who needs to possess or use radioactive material will need to apply for an RUA. Radioactive material includes radioactive sealed sources, density gauges, chemical radionuclides and source material.
The campus Radiation Safety Committee approves all applications for the use of radioactive material.
Radiation Safety Training provided in UCLC and on-the-job training is required training to use radioactive materials. Other trainings may apply such as radiological security training or density gauge training. All training requirements will be established during the Radiation Use Authorization application process.
Any person on campus who possess a radiation producing machine (RPM) needs to apply for an MUA. RPMs include x-ray diffraction units, cabinet x-ray units, electron microscopes, CT units, and any custom made device that emits radiation.
Radiation Producing Machine Safety Training provided in UCLC and on-the-job training is required training to use radiation producing machines. All training requirements will be established during the Radiation Use Authorization application process.
